Parfleche & Pavé

Parflèche as defined by 1823 Canadian French; parer “to ward off” and flèche “arrow”. This term is often used in reference to many specialized rawhide articles produced by Indigenous peoples of the Great Plains, including Northern Cheyenne, Southern Cheyenne, and Arapaho tribes. Rectangular folding cases were made of elk or buffalo hide. Often decorated with earth paints in geometric designs, these containers stood up to the rigors of life on the plains.
